What are the different types of AI?
Explore the different types of AI, including generative, predictive, agentic and industrial AI, and learn how each can support manufacturers.

What are the different types of AI?
One of the biggest misconceptions about artificial intelligence is that it’s a single technology. It isn’t.
When people talk about AI, they’re actually referring to a collection of different technologies, each designed to solve different kinds of problems. Understanding the main types of AI can help businesses identify which capabilities are most relevant to the challenges they need to solve.
Generative AI
You’ve probably already come across generative AI. This is the type of AI that can create new content, whether that’s writing text, generating images or helping answer questions in natural language. Tools like ChatGPT are examples of generative AI.
Predictive AI
Rather than creating something new, predictive AI looks at historical data to identify patterns and forecast what might happen next. For a manufacturer, that could mean predicting demand, identifying maintenance issues or spotting changes in customer behaviour.
Agentic AI
You may also hear people talking about agentic AI. This is one of the newest developments in AI. Instead of simply responding to instructions, agentic AI can work towards a goal by planning tasks, gathering information and recommending—or even taking—actions along the way.
Industrial AI
Industrial AI isn’t a different type of AI altogether. It’s the application of AI to real operational challenges faced by manufacturers and distributors. It combines AI capabilities with business context to help improve planning, visibility and decision-making.
Why understanding the different types of AI matters
Each of these technologies has a different purpose. Some generate content. Some predict outcomes. Some help automate decisions. Some are designed specifically for industrial operations.
Understanding those differences is important because not every business needs every type of AI. The real value comes from understanding which capability is right for the problem you’re trying to solve. Artificial intelligence isn’t one technology. It’s a collection of different capabilities, each designed to solve different problems.
